Ultrafast Phenomena and Femtosecond Technology

Description: This seminar is aimed at physics students from the sixth semester upwards who want to gain insight into the contemporary topics of ultrafast physics, including elementary interaction processes and dynamics of condensed matter far from thermal equilibrium. These fundamental phenomena form the basis for understanding of various topics from modern electronics via chemical reactions to fundamental processes in photobiology. Energy-time uncertainty defines the temporal limit for low-energy physics, chemistry and molecular biology in the femtosecond range (1 fs = 10-15 sec). Therefore, ultrafast phenomena are accessible only by special laser technologies combined with advanced measurement methods.
The seminar topics will expose the basic concepts needed in Ultrafast Science starting from ultrashort optical pulse generation and extending to cutting-edge spectroscopy techniques used to investigate light-matter interaction at the fundamental timescale. Another aim of the seminar is to train the participants in the art of scientific presentation and information transfer. English will be the official language of the seminar series.
